Christmas market trips 2026: when to go before they close

If you are planning a Christmas market trip in 2026, go on one of the first two weekends of December. Most European Christmas markets close on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day, some finish on the 23rd, and only a few, Prague first among them, genuinely carry on into January.

That matters because of a mistake people make every year, and it is expensive because you only find out once you are there: booking the trip for the week between Christmas and New Year, which is when most of us actually have time off. By then most of the markets have packed away.

This is not a quirk of opening hours. A European Christmas market is an Advent market: it exists for the weeks before Christmas, not for Christmas itself. By the 25th, its season is over.

What actually happens on the 24th and 25th

Vienna's Christmas Market on Rathausplatz, the enormous one in all the photographs, runs 13 November to 26 December 2026, and on Christmas Eve it closes at 6:30pm. Those are the dates on the market's own site.

Cologne goes further. The market in front of the cathedral runs from 16 November and closes on 23 December 2026, according to the city's Christmas market listings, and so do the ones on Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz. Germany and Austria follow much the same pattern: the 23rd or early on the 24th, and then that is it. On the 25th, most do not open at all.

Even the markets that stay open into the New Year shorten the day on Christmas Eve. Bruges closes its markets at 5pm on the 24th and opens on Christmas Day with fewer stalls and shorter hours; Brussels shuts at 6pm on the 24th.

So if you fly out on the afternoon of the 24th to "spend Christmas at the markets", what you will mostly find is stalls being packed away.

"Open until January" does not mean what you think

Here is the detail almost nobody explains, and it changes the decision.

Some sites genuinely do continue after Christmas, but what continues is not always a Christmas market. Vienna is the clearest example: what carries on at Rathausplatz until 6 January 2027 is the ice rink, which also closes on 31 December. The big Christmas market itself ends on the 26th.

Prague is the genuine exception. The Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets both run 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, according to Prague City Tourism. Brussels' Winter Wonders runs to 3 January 2027 and the Bruges markets do too. If your free days are after Christmas and you want a real Christmas market rather than a skating rink or a New Year party, those three are the safer bets.

And within a single city the answer can be both. In Cologne, the cathedral market closes on 23 December while the Old Town market runs until 10 January 2027 and the harbour one until 3 January. Which is why "is Cologne open after Christmas?" has no useful answer: you have to ask about the specific market.

When to go on a Christmas market trip in 2026

The first two weekends of December, which this year means 5 and 6 December or 12 and 13 December 2026. (If you are deciding where else to go off-season, where to travel alone in Europe has eight easy first trips.) By then everything is open, since most markets start between mid- and late November, and you are ahead of the surge in the final week before Christmas, when flights and hotels jump and the big squares become genuinely unpleasant to walk through.

There is an awkward fact for British travellers here: there is no bank holiday in early December. UK bank holidays go from the end of August straight to Christmas Day. So unlike much of mainland Europe, you cannot ride a public holiday into this. A Friday or a Monday of annual leave turns a weekend into the best possible window, and it is the cheapest annual leave you will spend all year.

The second-best window is the first half of December generally. The worst is anything from the 24th onwards.

Christmas market trips from the UK in 2026

Searches like «christmas market trips 2026 from uk», «christmas market trip to bruges» or «christmas market day trip europe» are mostly asking one thing: how far can I get without it turning into a whole expedition? Further than you might think, and by train.

Lille is the closest. Eurostar gives the journey from London as under an hour and a half, direct, which makes it the one market abroad you can comfortably do in a day. Its Christmas village on Place Rihour usually runs from mid-November to the end of December; the 2026 dates were not yet on official sources when this was written, so check before you go.

Brussels is 1 hour 53 minutes from London, direct, according to Eurostar. Winter Wonders runs 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, from midday to 10pm, closing at 6pm on 24 and 31 December. It is also a day trip if you start early, though a night makes it a different experience.

Bruges is the one people picture, and it is typically 3 hours 20 minutes from London, changing in Brussels onto a Belgian train. Its two markets, on the Markt and on Simon Stevinplein, run 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, according to the city's official visitor site. Possible as a day trip, but with nearly seven hours on trains it works much better as a weekend.

Cologne is just over five hours with a change in Brussels, which puts a German Christmas market within reach of a Friday off. Remember that its cathedral market closes on 23 December.

Amsterdam is direct in 4 hours 19 minutes, and Eurostar says direct trains to Antwerp start in December 2026; until then, Antwerp means a change in Brussels. Paris is 2 hours 16 minutes, if what you want is a big city with markets in it rather than a market town.

By air, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Kraków and Copenhagen are all short-haul from the UK. From London the choice is wide. From regional airports, and the searches show plenty of people looking from Belfast, Edinburgh or Bristol, direct routes change with the season, so start with your airport's own list of winter destinations and build the trip around what flies on a Friday and back on a Sunday or Monday.

Which city in 2026, depending on what you want

Vienna is the classic and the biggest: more than a dozen markets spread across the city, from the crowded Rathausplatz to Spittelberg, which is small and actually sells craft. If you only ever do one, do this one.

Prague concentrates everything into two squares and wins on setting: the market is not the main event, the city around it is. It is also the one that genuinely runs to Epiphany.

Budapest has the best food by a distance and is the cheapest of the group. Its main markets, on Vörösmarty Square and at St Stephen's Basilica, have historically run from mid-November to around New Year, but the 2026 dates had not been published officially in early October, so treat anything after Christmas as unconfirmed until they are.

Kraków holds its market in one of the largest medieval squares in Europe and is the least touristy of the group. A good choice if you have already done the others.

Copenhagen plays a different game: the market sits inside the Tivoli Gardens, so you pay to enter the park and what you buy is a whole evening rather than a wander between huts. Christmas in Tivoli runs from 13 November to 3 January, according to Tivoli's own site. The most expensive and the best after dark.

Bruges and Brussels are the ones to pick if getting there matters as much as the market: no airport, no liquids bag, and you can be among the stalls by lunchtime.

How to plan a Christmas market trip

  1. Dates first, then people. Pick the weekend you can actually do and find people for it, rather than looking for a date that suits everyone. December is the month when everyone's diary is already full.
  2. The closing date of the specific market, not the city. Cologne shows why: one market closes on the 23rd and another runs to 10 January. The market's own site, or the city's official tourism site, is the only source that does not get this wrong.
  3. That the dates are confirmed. Most cities have published 2026 by now, but not all; Budapest and Kraków had not on official sources in early October. If you book before they do, leave yourself margin.
  4. Transport before the hotel. On the best December weekends it is the flights and the Eurostar seats that sell out and spike, not the beds.

And if the problem is not the dates but the company

Christmas market trips are among the hardest to get a group to agree on, precisely because they land in the weeks when everyone already has commitments. Someone always has a work party, someone else has family. If you do manage to get friends on board, how to travel with friends and stay friends covers the four things worth settling before anyone books.

TravelMatch is for when they cannot come: you put up the dates you can actually do, say Brussels on 12 and 13 December, and find people going the same way, or join a trip someone has already planned. You see where you match on budget, pace and how you like to plan before anyone books, organise the itinerary and shared expenses in the same place, and it is free. If the people would be new to you, how to travel with a group of strangers covers what to settle first.

And if your free days fall over Christmas itself, when most markets have already shut, solo holidays at Christmas 2026 goes through the calendar for this year and the options for finding people for exactly those dates.

What does not work is waiting until the last week of December in the hope that the markets will still be there.

Dates are from the markets' and cities' own official sources, read on 7 October 2026: Vienna's Christmas Market site (13 November to 26 December 2026, closing 6:30pm on 24 December; the ice rink on the same square to 6 January 2027, closed on 31 December), Prague City Tourism (Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027), koeln.de (Cologne Cathedral, Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz 16 November to 23 December 2026; Old Town 23 November 2026 to 10 January 2027; harbour 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027), Visit Bruges (20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, closing 5pm on 24 December), Winter Wonders Brussels (27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, closing 6pm on 24 and 31 December) and Tivoli (13 November to 3 January). Journey times are from Eurostar's own pages on the same date. Budapest, Kraków and Lille had not published 2026 dates on official sources at the time of writing. Check the specific market before booking: calendars change from year to year. No prices are quoted here on purpose.

Frequently asked questions

When do European Christmas markets close in 2026?

Earlier than almost everyone expects, because they are Advent markets: they exist for the weeks before Christmas rather than for Christmas itself. Vienna's Christmas Market on Rathausplatz runs 13 November to 26 December 2026 and closes at 6:30pm on Christmas Eve, according to the market's own site. The Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral finishes even earlier, on 23 December 2026, according to koeln.de. Across Germany and Austria the pattern is much the same: closing on the 23rd or early on the 24th, and most do not open at all on the 25th.

Are Christmas markets open between Christmas and New Year?

Mostly not, and this is the expensive mistake because it is the week when people have time off. The clear exception is Prague, whose Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets run 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 according to Prague City Tourism. Brussels' Winter Wonders (27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027) and the Bruges Christmas markets (20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027) also continue into the New Year, with shorter hours on Christmas Eve, and in Bruges on Christmas Day. In Vienna, what carries on at Rathausplatz after Boxing Day is the ice rink, not the Christmas market.

When is the best time for a Christmas market trip in 2026?

The first two weekends of December: 5 and 6 December or 12 and 13 December 2026. Everything is open by then, since most markets start between mid- and late November, and you are ahead of the final week before Christmas, when flights and hotels jump and the big squares get hard to walk through. From the UK there is no bank holiday between late August and Christmas Day, so one day of annual leave on the Friday or the Monday is what turns a weekend into the best window. The worst time is anything from the 24th onwards.

What are the easiest Christmas market trips from the UK in 2026?

By train, Lille, Brussels and Bruges. Eurostar gives London to Lille as under an hour and a half and London to Brussels as 1 hour 53 minutes, both direct; Bruges is typically 3 hours 20 minutes with a change in Brussels, and Cologne just over five hours with the same change. Amsterdam is direct in 4 hours 19 minutes, and Eurostar says direct trains to Antwerp start in December 2026. Lille and Brussels work as a day trip from London. Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Kraków and Copenhagen are short-haul flights; from regional airports such as Belfast, Edinburgh or Bristol, check your airport's own list of winter destinations, because direct routes vary by season.

Does Budapest have Christmas markets?

Yes. The two main ones are on Vörösmarty Square and in front of St Stephen's Basilica, and they are known for their food. They have historically run from mid-November to around New Year, but the official 2026 dates had not been published when this was written in October 2026, so check the markets' own sites before booking anything after Christmas.

How do you plan a Christmas market trip?

In this order. Fix the dates first, ideally one of the first two December weekends, and find the people who can do those dates, rather than trying to find a date that suits everyone. That is what TravelMatch is for: you put up the trip with your dates and destination, find people going the same way and see where you match on budget, pace and how you plan before anyone books. Then check the closing date of the specific market rather than the city, because in Cologne, for example, the cathedral market closes on 23 December while the Old Town one runs to 10 January 2027. Book transport before accommodation, because on the best December weekends it is the seats that sell out first.

Is a Christmas market package or coach trip better than organising it yourself?

It depends on what is missing. If what you are missing is the company, organising it yourself with TravelMatch is the more direct answer: you choose the city, the dates and the people, matched on budget and pace, and everyone books their own travel, so there is no single supplement. The alternative is a package or coach trip, where the operator fixes the route, the hotel and the timetable, and the group is whoever else booked. That suits people who would rather not plan anything, as long as they are happy with the dates on offer.

Can I do a Christmas market trip alone?

Yes, and the markets themselves are easy alone: you walk, eat standing up and nobody books a table. What is harder is the evenings and the planning on your own. If you would rather have company, TravelMatch lets you put up the trip with your dates or join one someone else has posted, and talk to the people before anyone books. If your free days fall over Christmas itself rather than early December, remember that most markets will have closed by then and choose a city that stays open, such as Prague.
